From an architectural layout perspective, the main body of Poly Grand Theatre is situated on the northern section of the plot, comprising a 3-story building. A 4-story commercial building is planned for the southern section. Along Jiulong Avenue, there are seven multi-story commercial buildings and two high-rise commercial office towers, with Tower #2 standing at 103.2 meters and Tower #3 at 87.2 meters.
In terms of design philosophy, Poly Grand Theatre draws inspiration from the angular form of porcelain cubes as its prototype, embodying the grandeur, solidity, and timeless elegance of Nanchang’s cultural heritage. Taking cues from the traditional craft of “Linglong Eye” (exquisite pierced porcelain), the façade details are reimagined with a contemporary touch. The exterior features a pixelated matrix of ceramic and glass bricks, varying in translucency and opacity, creating an overall “Chinese White” color palette for the building.
The theatre primarily integrates three functions: performance, education, and exhibition. These are distributed across the Grand Auditorium, a multifunctional theatre, and dedicated education and exhibition zones, collectively forming the “mountain-like” structure. Inside, the theatre houses a 1,600-seat opera house and a 470-capacity black box theatre.
The opera house follows the classical horseshoe plan, with curved walls enhancing acoustic quality. The 470-seat multifunctional theatre is designed as a highly adaptable black box space, suitable for diverse events and exhibitions. Its rectangular layout omits side balconies. Steeply raked seating ensures optimal sightlines to the stage and can retract to create a flat floor space. Side stages can be enclosed with movable and rotating leg curtains, transforming the room into a perfectly shaped “box.” The lobby of the small theatre doubles as an exhibition area or hosts commercial performances beyond cultural shows. The stage opens to the central foyer, enabling pop-up events, lectures, or intimate performances.
