Singapore’s National Stadium, the world’s largest large-span dome building, is located on a 35-hectare site in a scenic and strategically located waterfront area. With a unique integrated ecosystem of sports, shopping and leisure venues, the National Stadium serves as a hub between Singapore’s expanding city center and the public downtown.
Singapore National Stadium
Consider the often dreary local weather: hot, humid and often rainy. For this, the movable roof is a perfect fit. With a span of 310 meters, the stadium’s dome became the world’s largest open dome when it was completed in 2014.
The movable part of the roof is covered with PTFE cushions and is equipped with the world’s largest LED light system, which covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters. It takes 25 minutes to open and close the dome, and when the arena is closed, the dome is closed to keep the grass court in a healthy state. The fixing part of the roof is made of traditional metal panels. The fixing section is made up of multiple parts, and thanks to Arup’s parametric design, only 8,000 tons of steel were used for the canopy, reducing the weight of the building considerably.
Unparalleled Cooling and Ventilation
The Pavilion utilizes the latest cooling systems. Instead of the traditional overhead cooling method, the air vents are installed under the seats so that the viewer is in a comfortable air-conditioned cushion. At the same time, the design reduces the space to be cooled, thus greatly reducing energy consumption.
In addition, large louvers were installed to shield the stadium’s perimeter arches from sunlight and rain, connecting the different parts of the stadium while allowing air to circulate naturally, making it the only stadium in the world that utilizes natural ventilation.
Bowl Removable Grandstand
The National Stadium’s spectator stand has a removable design with retractable seating, which allows the bowl section of the stand to be reset on demand, allowing the spectators’ seats to be moved forward when the front rows of athletes’ seats are unoccupied, greatly enhancing the spectacle and atmosphere of the event. This makes the stadium the only one in the world capable of hosting multiple events such as rugby, cricket, soccer, athletics and concerts in one venue.
The retractable roof and energy-efficient bowl-shaped bleacher cooling technology also represent new heights in sustainable stadiums. This stadium design is not only environmentally friendly, but also provides a unique and comfortable environment for athletes and spectators.
