Why Is Laminated Glass So Much More Expensive Than Regular Glass?

We encounter glass in our daily lives, and interior designers often leverage its advantages in home decor—such as enhancing the visual openness of a space and improving natural light. However, many homeowners worry that glass is fragile and could injure their children, so they hesitate to use it extensively. Today, we’ll explain the difference between laminated glass and ordinary, breakable glass.

As the name suggests, laminated glass is a composite glass created through a high-temperature process that sandwiches EVA, SGP, or PVB adhesive between multiple layers of glass. Unlike ordinary glass, which is fragile, laminated glass holds together when broken, preventing sharp shards from causing injury or damage. It is commonly used in large-scale applications such as railings, glass canopies, windows, and flooring.

Secondly, although laminated glass is thicker than ordinary glass, it does not affect natural light or transparency at all. Precisely because it is thicker, it reduces noise, provides cold resistance and thermal insulation, and helps prevent the spread of fire. The common scenario where burglars break a window to enter a home will not occur with laminated glass.

Furthermore, the interlayer film comes in various types, each offering distinct properties. It helps absorb impact forces and, in some cases, provides UV protection, preserving the color and finish of indoor furniture and appliances while reducing heating and cooling costs. As a result, it is the top choice for window glass in many large office buildings and high-rise residences.

Moreover, the interlayer can be embedded with decorative paper or various colors and patterns, offering a much better decorative effect than ordinary glass and allowing selection based on different interior design styles.

However, laminated glass is relatively expensive. If water seeps into the glass, it can easily form bubbles in the interlayer, making the glass surface appear blurry—something that people with OCD simply cannot tolerate. If left in the interlayer for an extended period, these bubbles can cause the adhesive to delaminate, leading to shattering.

Therefore, ensure the interlayer is completely dry before installation, and avoid storing laminated glass in high-humidity environments to prevent the adhesive from losing its粘性. When purchasing, look for high-quality brand-name products to avoid buying substandard laminated glass that may delaminate or shatter after use.
